Bayern’s new sports chief Eberl still hopes for title this season
Max Eberl, set to assume the role of Bayern Munich’s head of sport on March 1, expressed optimism about the current season despite the team trailing by eight points in the Bundesliga standings. Eberl, a familiar face at Bayern having spent 15 years there as both a youth player and a professional until 1994, previously held the position of sports director at Borussia Moenchengladbach for 14 years before joining RB Leipzig in 2022.
However, his tenure at Leipzig was short-lived as he was dismissed in September amidst speculation linking him to a potential move back to Bayern. Speaking at a press conference in Munich, Eberl expressed his delight at returning home after three decades, emphasizing his determination to maximize the remainder of the season despite the challenging circumstances.
Acknowledging the unusual situation of being eight points behind in the league standings, Eberl remained hopeful, stating, “It is a challenge but I don’t want to write off the season just yet. There are still too many points left. Now it is about not gifting away the next three months.” He also highlighted the team’s recent improvement, citing a 2-1 home victory over RB Leipzig as evidence of their resilience.
Looking ahead, Eberl revealed his intention to collaborate with club officials in identifying a successor for current coach Thomas Tuchel, who will depart at the end of the season. Tuchel’s departure comes after a turbulent period marked by disappointing results, raising questions about Bayern’s ability to secure a 12th consecutive league title.
While speculation swirls regarding the next coach, Eberl emphasized the importance of a thorough and deliberate selection process, stressing, “For us it is about finding the right coach for Bayern.” Despite the challenges facing Bayern both domestically and in Europe, Eberl remains optimistic about the team’s prospects and is committed to pursuing success in the face of adversity.
