Chelsea’s recent hiring of Bernardo Cueva has sparked speculation that Mauricio Pochettino could find himself at odds with the club’s hierarchy. Pochettino has asserted his authority in deciding whether Cueva will be present on the touchline during matches.
In a move costing around £750,000 in compensation to Brentford, Cueva has been brought in to establish a new set-piece division within the team. This role was previously overseen by Toni Jimenez, Chelsea’s goalkeeper coach, whose responsibilities included set pieces, a position Pochettino has previously played down.
While few Premier League teams, such as Aston Villa and Arsenal, have dedicated set-piece coaches on the sidelines, Pochettino has stated his preference for having control over Cueva’s involvement during games.
“As the head coach, I will determine who joins me on the touchline and whether additional staff are required,” Pochettino affirmed. He acknowledged that while Cueva’s arrival was suggested by the club’s owners and sporting directors, he and his coaching team are supportive of the decision.
Pochettino emphasized the club’s desire to enhance their expertise in set pieces and expressed openness to learning from others to improve their performance. Despite previously questioning the necessity of specialized set-piece coaches, Pochettino stressed the importance of having proficient players who excel in delivering and receiving set pieces.
“We have a comprehensive coaching setup, including specialists and analysts dedicated to set pieces,” Pochettino noted. He highlighted the significance of quality in identifying capable players for set-piece execution, citing examples like James Ward-Prowse of Southampton as an exemplary taker.
Pochettino urged for a focus on player proficiency over relying solely on coaching expertise, citing the impact of talented players like Ward-Prowse in improving set-piece effectiveness. He emphasized the collaborative effort between coaching staff and players in achieving success on the field.
