Seven main Man United players will miss the match against Liverpool on Sunday

During Manchester United’s recent match against Chelsea, their defensive lineup faced a significant setback. The team, which was already struggling, experienced a blow when both Jonny Evans and Raphaël Varane were forced to leave the field due to injuries. The first to go was Varane, who had to be substituted just before halftime, forcing Evans into action sooner than expected.

Unfortunately, Evans’ time on the field was short-lived as well. He succumbed to injury just 20 minutes after stepping onto the pitch. This unfortunate turn of events leaves manager Erik ten Hag with a serious shortage of options for center-backs, especially with Lisandro Martínez and Victor Lindelof already sidelined for the next month. This injury crisis comes at a critical time as the team prepares for a crucial showdown against Liverpool.

With only Harry Maguire and emerging talent Willy Kambwala as the sole available central defenders under Ten Hag’s command, Manchester United faces a potential vulnerability in their defensive line, presenting Liverpool with an opportunity to exploit any weaknesses at Old Trafford. Reflecting on the setbacks endured during the match at Stamford Bridge, Ten Hag openly acknowledged the negative impact of losing Evans and Varane, though he expressed uncertainty about their availability for Sunday’s crucial fixture.

During a post-match interview, Ten Hag expressed his frustration, stating, “It’s difficult in moments like these when you have to manage the game. It’s helpful to have leaders on the pitch. We also had to substitute Casemiro. It’s not ideal. They know how to handle pressure and secure the victory. I can’t predict what will happen on Sunday, but we had to take both of them off.” When questioned about Varane’s fitness for the upcoming Liverpool clash, Ten Hag admitted, “At this moment, I’m unsure. I can’t provide any guarantees.”

Adding to Manchester United’s injury concerns, Anthony Martial remains sidelined following groin surgery that kept him out since December, while Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are also unavailable due to their respective injuries, further complicating the team’s selection process.
