Erik ten Hag takes aim back at Jose Mourinho – and Man United’s transfer business – as he tries to shoot down former boss’s claim that he’s only post-Fergie manager ‘to get the players he wanted’

Erik ten Hag, Manchester United’s current manager, argues that only one manager, namely Mourinho, received adequate support from the club’s hierarchy over the past decade. Since taking the reins in 2022, he has invested approximately £400 million in players like Antony, Mason Mount, Rasmus Hojlund, and Andre Onana. Ten Hag recently disclosed unsuccessful attempts to sign Harry Kane and Frenkie de Jong, the latter being pivotal to implementing the Ajax style.

Contrary to Mourinho’s claims of insufficient financial backing, Ten Hag asserts that the club has provided substantial support during his tenure. He emphasizes the importance of acquiring desired players to compete effectively in a league where multiple teams vie for the title, expanding beyond the traditional two-horse race. Currently positioned eighth in the Premier League, United faces Crystal Palace in a crucial Monday night encounter.

Despite uncertainties surrounding his future amid deliberations by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, Ten Hag emphasizes patience and trust in the ongoing process. He stresses the significance of nurturing outstanding talents while acknowledging the need for time and perseverance in achieving desired outcomes both individually and collectively.
