“When I arrived, it was quite a mess.” “I was harming the team and didn’t want to expose myself.” -Chelsea star admits he ‘harmed’ the team and says Mauricio Pochettino fixed squad ‘mess’

Enzo Fernandez, the Argentine World Cup winner and Chelsea midfielder, has openly acknowledged that his decision to play through injuries this season adversely affected his team’s performance. His honest admission comes amid a challenging season where he has battled a persistent hernia issue, which ultimately required surgical intervention last month, sidelining him for the remainder of the season.

Fernandez, who joined Chelsea just over a year ago with a high-profile move worth £106.8 million from Benfica, has been vocal about the positive changes under the guidance of manager Mauricio Pochettino. He praised Pochettino for bringing much-needed structure and a clear identity to the club, which he felt was somewhat chaotic upon his arrival.

In an interview with DSports, Fernandez reflected on his initial impressions and the transformative influence Pochettino has had on the team. “When I arrived, it was quite a mess with a lot of guys not really pulling together as a unit. Mauricio has provided the team with direction and a sense of identity. There is a noticeable difference in the work ethic now. In reality, he’s changed everything for the better,” Fernandez explained.

Under Pochettino’s leadership, Fernandez notes that there is a renewed seriousness and commitment among the squad. This enhanced focus during training sessions throughout the week translates into improved performances come matchday, a shift that has been vital for the team.

As for his personal journey, Fernandez has endured a tough season, playing through pain and relying on injections to manage his condition. He shared that opting for surgery was a critical but difficult decision as he was reluctant to admit that his continued participation on the field was detrimental to the team’s performance.

With his surgery now behind him, Fernandez is focusing on his rehabilitation with an eye towards representing Argentina in the upcoming Copa America, which kicks off on June 20 against Canada. “I spent eight months toying with pain and injections,” he said, revealing the extent of his discomfort. “Surgery was the best option, but I had to make the decision. I didn’t want to reveal that I was hurting the squad.”

Now on the mend, Fernandez is optimistic about his recovery. “I’m okay, you guys can relax,” he reassured fans. “My condition is improving daily, and I can’t wait for the Copa America to come.” He is eagerly anticipating returning to training with the national team and has already begun working out on the pitch.

The upcoming Copa America holds a special significance for Fernandez, as it will be his first participation in the tournament. “This will be my first time playing in the Copa America, so I’m really enthusiastic about it,” he expressed, underscoring his excitement and determination to return to peak physical condition in time for the prestigious event.
