After engaging in an extensive one-and-a-half-hour discussion, Cesc Fabregas shared insights into his recent visit to Chelsea’s training ground and expressed his astonishment over Mauricio Pochettino’s sudden departure.
Mauricio Pochettino left his position at the west London club by mutual consent on Tuesday night, having been with the team for just under a year. In the wake of his departure, Chelsea is now on the hunt for a new head coach.
Despite a season filled with ups and downs, Chelsea ended strongly, stringing together five consecutive victories to secure a place in European competition. Their efforts also saw them reach the finals of the Carabao Cup and the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
During his appearance on the BBC Sounds’ Planet Premier League podcast on Wednesday, Fabregas, who is currently managing Como, clarified that his visit to Cobham Training Centre last Friday gave no hint of the imminent end to Pochettino’s tenure. His comments quelled any speculation about him being a potential candidate for the managerial role at Chelsea.
“It’s challenging to form or express an opinion when you’re not present to see everything unfold firsthand,” Fabregas remarked. “Interestingly, I was actually there in person. I spent that weekend in London.”
Fabregas recalled his interactions with Pochettino, noting, “I’ve always gotten along well with Mauricio. To me, he has always been a true gentleman, particularly in our encounters during matches.”
He added, “So, considering that they had won four games in a row by the time of my visit on Friday, just two days before the season concluded, there was a noticeably relaxed, positive atmosphere around the training ground as they prepared for the final game of the season.”
