Manchester United’s Striker Hunt Intensifies This Summer

Manchester United are ramping up their efforts to secure a new striker this summer, having already received feedback in their quest to land one of their targets.

Rasmus Hojlund’s First Season and Challenges

Rasmus Hojlund, who was brought in by manager Erik ten Hag last summer, had a mixed debut season at Old Trafford. The young Danish forward displayed promise during a mid-season purple patch but struggled at the beginning and end of the campaign. Remarkably, nine of his twelve Premier League goal contributions came within a prolific seven-week period from December to February.

Hojlund’s Performance Metrics

| Metric | Games 1-18 | Games 19-25 | Games 26-38 |
|——————-|————-|————-|————-|
| Appearances | 14 | 6 | 10 |
| Starts | 11 | 6 | 8 |
| Goals | 0 | 7 | 3 |
| Assists | 0 | 2 | 0 |
| Goals/Assists per game | 0 | 1.5 | 0.375 |

At just 21 years old, Hojlund often found himself shouldering the burden of United’s attacking duties alone. Despite this, he demonstrated significant potential. However, with Anthony Martial’s departure as a free agent this summer, Hojlund remains the sole recognized striker in the Manchester United squad.

This scenario underscores United’s urgent need for reinforcements in their forward line. Their initial plan to sign Benjamin Sesko fell through when he renewed his contract with RB Leipzig. Consequently, United have had to look elsewhere for attacking options. Under new owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the club is keen to avoid past mistakes, focusing on acquiring a young striker to complement Hojlund—someone less prone to fitness issues and financially viable compared to Martial.

Maximilian Beier: A Potential Target

Reports from Sports Bild (via Sport Witness) suggest that Manchester United have shown interest in Maximilian Beier, a promising 21-year-old forward from Hoffenheim. Beier is also on the radar of Bayer Leverkusen and Liverpool. The young German had a standout season, netting 16 goals in 33 Bundesliga matches, which led to his debut for the German national team in the June internationals and a spot in the squad for the upcoming EURO 2024 in Germany.

Alexander Rosen, Hoffenheim’s sporting director, spoke highly of Beier: “Maxi Beier is a super guy and an extremely talented striker. He is incredibly fast, dangerous, and can kick really well.”

Manchester United have reportedly made an initial inquiry into the terms needed to sign Beier. Hoffenheim pointed to his €32.5 million (£27.4 million) release clause as a starting point for negotiations. This clause is set to decrease by €2.5 million each summer over the remaining three years of his contract, during which he currently earns £16,000 per week.

Given the potential for increased interest in Beier following EURO 2024, Manchester United might aim to secure his signature sooner rather than later if they are serious about adding him to their ranks. With the club looking to bolster their attacking options and provide Hojlund with much-needed support, the acquisition of a young, dynamic striker like Beier could prove to be a strategic move for the Red Devils this summer.
