Liverpool Star Set to Break 64-Year Euros Record

Liverpool is gearing up to mark a historic milestone during the initial fixtures of Euro 2024 this upcoming weekend. While the spotlight is expected to shine on celebrated figures like Kylian Mbappe, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Harry Kane, one standout figure from Anfield is poised to surpass a long-standing record that has endured for 64 years.

The Reds proudly showcase a roster where several players hold the honor of captaining their respective national teams this summer. Among them are Virgil van Dijk, leading the charge for the Netherlands, and Andy Robertson, guiding Scotland. However, all eyes are sure to be fixed on Dominik Szoboszlai should he grace the pitch in Hungary’s opening clash against Switzerland on Saturday at Euro 2024.

Having been entrusted with the captain’s armband by head coach Marco Rossi since November 2022, Szoboszlai played a pivotal role in Hungary’s qualification campaign for Euro 2024. At the youthful age of just 22, Szoboszlai stands on the cusp of etching his name into the annals of European football history by becoming the youngest ever captain in the Euros, a distinction that has stood since the tournament’s inception in 1960.

Ahead of leading his side onto the field at 23 years, seven months, and 21 days old in Cologne, Szoboszlai expressed profound pride in achieving this momentous milestone. He extended gratitude to Rossi for placing his faith in him with the captaincy.

Hungary enters the tournament buoyed by a solid run of form, having recently chalked up an impressive 14-match unbeaten streak, only interrupted by the Republic of Ireland in a warm-up match ahead of Euro 2024. A victorious start against Switzerland would firmly position Rossi’s squad in contention for advancement to the knockout stages.

Szoboszlai’s journey at Euro 2024 may potentially see him cross paths with England’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez, provided Hungary secures the top spot in their group while England finishes as runners-up in Group C.
