Manchester United’s defensive struggles were evident last season as they conceded 58 goals in the Premier League, a stark increase of 15 goals compared to their 2022-23 campaign. During that period, David De Gea’s outstanding performances earned him the Golden Glove award.

Despite De Gea’s previous success, manager Erik ten Hag decided to part ways with the Spanish goalkeeper, allowing him to leave on a free transfer. Ten Hag brought in Andre Onana, an international goalkeeper from Cameroon, as De Gea’s replacement. While Onana delivered an impressive performance in the FA Cup final, his overall contributions throughout the season were considered merely average.

As a result, Manchester United are reportedly seeking a new goalkeeper to strengthen their squad. Recent reports suggest that the club has set its sights on Jan Oblak, the highly regarded Slovenian goalkeeper currently with Atletico Madrid. Oblak has been recognized multiple times as the best goalkeeper in La Liga and has garnered interest from top clubs worldwide.

Sources from TDF indicate that Oblak is contemplating a move away from Atletico Madrid during the summer transfer window, with Manchester United among the potential suitors. Oblak, who has a contract with Atletico running until 2028, commands the highest salary at the club, approximately £305,000 per week. Manchester United is reportedly prepared to offer a substantial fee to secure his services.

Last season, Oblak made 38 appearances in La Liga under the guidance of manager Diego Simeone, achieving 13 clean sheets. His consistent performances have established him as a mainstay in Atletico’s lineup and a frequent participant in the UEFA Champions League.

Should Oblak decide to join Manchester United, he would have to forgo competing in the Champions League for the upcoming season. However, the allure of the Premier League and the opportunity to be part of a rejuvenated Manchester United squad might influence his decision. The Red Devils are eager to bolster their goalkeeping department, and acquiring a world-class talent like Oblak could be a pivotal move in their quest for success.
