Arsenal have reportedly initiated discussions to acquire Barcelona’s prominent player, Jules Kounde, who is currently preparing for a last-16 match at Euro 2024.
Manager Mikel Arteta is determined to bolster his squad this summer by addressing positions where Arsenal has lacked depth, particularly in securing backups for vital players like William Saliba and Bukayo Saka. This quest for versatile players has linked Arsenal to several wingers, including Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams, who is also participating in Euro 2024.
Besides Williams, Arsenal is now focusing on Kounde, who has excelled as France’s starting right-back. According to journalist Gerard Moreno, Arsenal has made inquiries about Kounde’s availability. Kounde’s ability to play across various defensive positions makes him a valuable potential backup for Saliba at right center-back.
Nevertheless, given Kounde’s impressive performances, he would likely be considered more of a starter than a backup if he joins Arsenal. Moreno mentioned on Twitch that Arsenal has recently contacted Barcelona about Kounde, indicating that the interest is in its preliminary stages but has the potential to advance further.
Barcelona signed Kounde for £42 million in 2023, and their new manager, Hansi Flick, would be hesitant to part with such a crucial player. Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu, has consistently adhered to a policy of not overpaying for transfer targets, a strategy that will be vital in these negotiations.
Additionally, with Napoli reportedly contemplating a move for an Arsenal defender this summer, the urgency to secure a versatile player like Kounde becomes even greater.
