“This was thr reason why we signed him. He won’t bench Rasmus Højlund and his will be his position. He has that type of Rooney’s style of play. This was why we also signed Rudd Van Nistelrooy”-Joshua Zirkzee’s Man United role revealed, how he’ll play with Rasmus Højlund

Joshua Zirkzee is poised to become Manchester United’s inaugural signing of the summer, following an agreement with Bologna. This move marks the first acquisition under the new INEOS ownership, with renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano confirming the finalization of the deal. United had been closely monitoring Zirkzee over recent weeks, and his transfer was sealed after the Netherlands’ exit from Euro 2024.
During the previous season, Zirkzee netted 12 goals and contributed seven assists for Bologna, playing a pivotal role in the club securing its first Champions League berth since the 1960s. According to Manchester World, United was keen on bolstering their attacking options in the summer transfer window, especially after Anthony Martial left the club as a free agent.
Rasmus Højlund, who joined from Atalanta last summer and scored 16 goals in his debut season, now faces the challenge of integrating with Zirkzee. Reports suggest that Zirkzee will serve as a backup to Højlund, implying that the Danish striker will continue to be the leading figure in United’s attack.
Moreover, Zirkzee is recognized for his versatility across the forward line, capable of playing behind the striker or on the flanks. The Dutchman has previously stated that he does not consider himself a conventional number nine. In an interview with Corriere della Sera earlier this year, he remarked, “I’m not a pure center forward. I mentioned a year ago that I enjoyed playing with an attacking partner. However, Motta transformed me into a nine and a half. I’m not an Arnautovic type; I like to advance after playing the ball, support the team, and score goals.”
Zirkzee is set to undergo his medical examination at Carrington on Friday, with an official announcement to follow. After a brief holiday, he is expected to join the squad during their tour of the United States.
