Chelsea Star Ian Maatsen has signed contract with this shocking Premier League for £40m after leaving Borussia Dortmund on loan.
Aston Villa and Chelsea have reached an agreement on the transfer fee for Dutch defender Ian Maatsen. The 22-year-old left-back is expected to cost between £35 million and £40 million, including potential add-ons. The move is contingent upon Maatsen passing a medical examination, with Villa Park preparing to offer him a six-year contract.
Maatsen, who spent the latter part of the previous season on loan at Borussia Dortmund and helped them reach the competition’s final, has opted for Villa due to their qualification for the Champions League next season.
Despite considering a swap deal involving Villa’s striker Jhon Duran, Chelsea ultimately decided to sell Maatsen separately. Dortmund had shown interest in securing Maatsen’s services after his impressive loan spell but were reluctant to meet Chelsea’s full £35 million valuation.
In January, Maatsen extended his contract with Chelsea for another year. However, the extension included a release clause, making it likely that he would depart this summer.
Currently, Maatsen is in Germany for the Euro 2024 tournament with the Netherlands national team, facing France on Friday in Leipzig. As a result, he has not yet completed his medical or finalized the contract with Aston Villa.
Maatsen joined Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven in 2019 and gained valuable experience through loan spells at Charlton, Coventry, Burnley, and Dortmund. Despite his efforts, he struggled to secure a regular spot in Chelsea’s first team under manager Mauricio Pochettino last season, participating in only 16 matches. Now, he is set to leave Stamford Bridge for a new chapter in his career with Aston Villa.
