Manchester United is reportedly closing in on their first significant transfer of the summer, as they have agreed on personal terms for a £70 million deal, with the new player’s jersey number already approved. The medical team is on standby to welcome Erik ten Hag’s first signing of the season.
The Red Devils are in advanced negotiations to acquire Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich, with the Dutch defender open to making the switch to Old Trafford. However, discussions have hit a snag over the transfer fee.
According to Christian Falk, a well-known Bundesliga expert, Bayern Munich has set De Ligt’s price at £59.4 million (€70 million). Manchester United, however, is only willing to offer half of that amount, around £29.7 million (€35 million). Falk, the Head of Football for Bild/Sport Bild, stated:
“FC Bayern must sell players to continue their purchasing spree. Erik ten Hag, who is currently negotiating a contract extension with Manchester United, is keen on bringing Matthijs de Ligt to the team.”
“Ten Hag is expected to pay a significant transfer fee for De Ligt. Bayern wants up to €70 million, but Manchester United is only prepared to offer half.”
Bayern Munich aims to bolster their central defense by signing Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen, the reigning Bundesliga champions. This move suggests they are open to offloading De Ligt, albeit not at the reduced price Manchester United is proposing.
Two years ago, Bayern Munich invested heavily, paying €77 million to acquire De Ligt from Juventus. Despite this substantial fee, the 24-year-old has struggled to secure a regular starting position at the Allianz Arena. It would be a major surprise if Bayern agreed to let him go for a fee significantly lower than what they initially paid.
De Ligt previously flourished under Erik ten Hag’s management at Ajax, and the Manchester United manager is hopeful of rekindling that successful partnership at Old Trafford.
Securing De Ligt for just £29.7 million would be a remarkable achievement for Manchester United, providing a strong boost to their defensive lineup as they prepare for the upcoming season.
