Man Utd issue rare update on Tyrell Malacia amid concern from fans

Manchester United has provided an uncommon update on their defender, Tyrell Malacia, as they gear up for the 2024/25 season.

As the new season approaches, Manchester United players who were not part of Euro 2024 and the 2024 Copa America have begun reporting back for pre-season training. Among those spotted at the Carrington training ground this week were Mason Mount, Marcus Rashford, Casemiro, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Jadon Sancho.

Fans, however, noticed the conspicuous absence of Dutch defender Tyrell Malacia from the released training photos, raising concerns about his status. Malacia, who was Erik ten Hag’s first signing upon becoming the United manager, has been on the road to recovery following a significant knee injury. He underwent surgery in the summer of 2023 and has not played for the Red Devils since.

On Sunday morning, the club provided a rare update on Malacia’s condition. United’s official website featured photos of him training, accompanied by a positive report. “There was encouraging news from Carrington on Friday as Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia made progress in his fitness program,” the statement read.

The update continued: “Young left-back Malacia returned to base earlier this week after working diligently throughout his summer break. This week, he has been pictured training individually on the grass under the supervision of the medical staff.”

Additionally, the club highlighted Malacia’s journey, noting that he joined United from Feyenoord in 2022 and has since made 39 appearances. “He is doing everything he can to regain full fitness,” the statement assured fans.

In preparation for the upcoming season, United confirmed the addition of Rene Hake and Ruud van Nistelrooy to Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff. Ten Hag expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We want to move forward and are thrilled to bring Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake in, to introduce some new dynamics, initiatives, and innovations.”

United’s pre-season schedule includes matches against Rosenborg, Rangers, Arsenal, Real Betis, and Liverpool. The season will officially kick off with the FA Community Shield against Manchester City on August 10.
