Barcelona star considering Premier League move after contract expired ahead of deadline

Roberto graduated from Barcelona’s prestigious La Masia academy and became a prominent member of the first team, amassing 373 appearances and winning seven La Liga titles. He took over the captaincy after Sergio Busquets left but became a free agent on June 30 due to a controversial contract issue.

Barcelona had planned to extend Roberto’s contract, and he was open to staying, having agreed to financial terms in May. However, due to financial fair play regulations, they couldn’t register him for another season right away. If he had signed, his registration wouldn’t have been approved until August 10.

With a July 10 deadline approaching and no resolution in sight, Roberto grew frustrated and decided not to sign, resulting in his departure from Barcelona after 14 years. According to Mundo Deportivo, the 32-year-old is now considering offers from other clubs.

Reports indicate that Sergi Roberto has turned down a move to the Saudi Pro League but has opportunities within La Liga, with interest from Sevilla, Valencia, and Girona. However, he is reportedly intrigued by the prospect of a new challenge abroad, particularly in the Premier League. Although specific clubs have not been mentioned, Roberto is assessing offers and is eager to join a team where he can significantly contribute at this stage of his career.

Initially a midfielder since his teenage years at Barcelona, Roberto was converted into a right-back during his time at the club.

Sergi Roberto is best known for scoring the dramatic last-minute winning goal in Barcelona’s comeback victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League in 2017.
