Bruno Fernandes couldn’t hold back his tears as he bid an emotional farewell to a Manchester United teammate set to leave the club. “Leaving Manchester United now feels like abandoning us during tough times,” he said. “I have so much to say, but I wish you the very best in your career ahead.”

Mason Greenwood took to social media for the first time since finalizing his permanent move to Marseille. United confirmed the transfer, which sees Greenwood join the French club for £26.6 million (€31.6 million). The 22-year-old travelled to France on Wednesday to complete the move and has now signed a five-year contract with the Ligue 1 team.

Marseille’s announcement read: “Olympique de Marseille is delighted to announce the signing of Mason Greenwood from Manchester United. The 22-year-old forward joins the club following a successful medical. Equally adept with both feet, Greenwood can play in any attacking position and has scored 35 goals and provided 12 assists in 129 appearances for Manchester United. Familiar with the electrifying atmosphere of Old Trafford, he even earned an international call-up for England in September 2020 at the age of 19.”

On Instagram, Greenwood shared a photo of himself signing the contract with Marseille, captioning it: “Really excited for this new chapter. Allez l’OM!”

Manchester United also released a statement: “Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United to join Olympique de Marseille on a permanent transfer. The 22-year-old English forward, who spent last season on loan at Getafe in Spain, made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for United since his debut in 2019. We wish Mason all the best in his future career.”

United decided that it was best for Greenwood to continue his career away from Old Trafford after his loan spell at Getafe last season. The club included a sell-on clause in the deal, ensuring they will receive a significant portion of any future transfer fee.
