As a legend of this great club I will always want the best for them, this season we’re not just coming for the Champions league spot we want to win the league”, Man united legend Paul scholes says Man united must sign £70m star to boost their chances of winning the league this season
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has emphasized the need for the club to reinforce their attacking options by signing a ‘proven’ centre-forward this summer. Scholes, a former midfielder renowned for his time at the club, believes that bringing in an experienced striker is crucial for Manchester United to improve their offensive capabilities and compete at the highest level.
Manchester United has been active in the transfer market following a lackluster Premier League season. They recently completed signings for Lille’s young defender Leny Yoro, 18, and Bologna’s forward Joshua Zirkzee, 23. Despite these acquisitions, the club is still working diligently to enhance manager Erik ten Hag’s squad before the transfer window closes. Among their top targets is Bayern Munich’s centre-back Matthijs de Ligt, a player widely regarded for his defensive prowess.
In addition to their search for a defender, Manchester United has shown interest in bolstering their midfield. They have been linked with Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte, but negotiations have hit a stumbling block as several offers have been rejected by the French club. This has forced United to explore alternative options to strengthen their midfield.
The arrival of Joshua Zirkzee is expected to alleviate some pressure on Rasmus Hojlund, who had an inconsistent debut season at Old Trafford, scoring ten goals following his £64 million transfer. Scholes voiced his concerns about the club’s dependence on the young forward, suggesting it was “unfair” to expect him to shoulder the scoring burden alone.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Scholes highlighted the importance of having an experienced striker to guide and support younger talents like Hojlund and Zirkzee. He recalled Manchester United’s history of fielding outstanding centre-forwards and expressed a desire for the club to sign a seasoned player capable of guaranteeing goals.
“I think about brilliant centre-forwards when I think about Manchester United,” Scholes said. “Last year, they relied heavily on a young player, Rasmus Hojlund, which I thought was a bit unfair. He’s still developing and learning the game. Now, they’ve brought in another young talent, Zirkzee, but I believe an experienced centre-forward is necessary to lead the line and ensure a steady flow of goals. Whether such a player is available in the market remains uncertain, but it’s a need that can’t be overlooked if the team aims to succeed next season.”
Beyond his analysis of Manchester United, Scholes also shared his views on potential managerial candidates for the England national team, as speculation grows around Gareth Southgate’s future. Scholes praised Eddie Howe, currently managing Newcastle United, and Pep Guardiola, the celebrated Manchester City manager, as potential successors.
“Eddie Howe has done an excellent job at Newcastle,” Scholes remarked. “He’s a fantastic coach, and many would agree he’s a strong candidate for the England job. Whether he can elevate the team to the next level is uncertain, but he has the capability. On the other hand, Pep Guardiola, with his wealth of experience and tactical acumen, could potentially be the ideal figure to lead the national team forward. His ability to work with this group of players could be key to achieving success.”
