“He is finally back to training and I think its finally time to tell the fans the truth on what happened to him. Its not only the injury. Its has never happened to any football players before. Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has given an update on Tyrell Malacia’s progress towards rejoining the first team after a lengthy absence due to injury.
Malacia, who transferred from Feyenoord in the Eredivisie to Manchester United in 2022 for approximately £15 million, has been out of action since last summer following knee surgery. His last match was United’s 2-1 win over Fulham on May 28, 2023.
Initially, ten Hag anticipated Malacia’s return in January. However, due to some complications in his recovery, he missed the entire 2023/24 season.
Currently, Malacia is making notable progress. He is following a personalized fitness regimen under the close monitoring of Manchester United’s medical staff at Carrington. Ten Hag expects Malacia to be ready by October, which is crucial considering the injury troubles Luke Shaw has faced over the past year.
“He is in a good place now, but I didn’t include him in the pre-season tour in the US because I only brought players who could participate in games or training with the team,” ten Hag explained. “He isn’t far off, but he’s still in the recovery phase. Soon, he will be able to join team training and then participate in matches. I think he could be back within two months.”
Manchester United recently announced that Malacia is doing “everything he can” to achieve full fitness before the 2024/25 season. However, they have not ruled out the possibility of signing another left-back this summer.
In terms of left-back options, ten Hag has reasons for optimism due to the pre-season performances of promising defender Harry Amass. The 17-year-old stood out in a 3-2 victory over Real Betis, where goals from Marcus Rashford, Amad Diallo, and Casemiro secured the win. Following his impressive display, some fans have suggested that Amass should be given more opportunities in the first team.
Luke Shaw, in an interview with GOAL, was asked about which young player fans should keep an eye on. He responded, “He’s a young left-back from Man United—Harry Amass.”
