Barcelona’s coach, Hansi Flick, has decided to adopt one of the strategies previously employed by former coach Xavi Hernandez in an effort to address a significant issue in the team’s midfield. The German coach is determined to lead Barcelona back to the top after a challenging season in which the Catalan team failed to secure any titles.
As reported by the Spanish newspaper “Mundo Deportivo,” Flick has opted to use Andreas Christensen as a defensive midfielder for the upcoming season. This decision aims to mitigate the current shortage of players in the midfield. Barcelona is currently dealing with injuries to key midfielders Pedri, Javi, and Frenkie de Jong, which has left the team struggling in this area. This situation has prompted Flick to revisit a tactic Xavi experimented with last season.
Last season, Xavi decided to try Christensen in the defensive midfielder role, following a suggestion from Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco. Flick has thoroughly analyzed Christensen’s performance in this position and found the results to be positive. He has also consulted with members of Barcelona’s technical staff regarding this decision.
It has been noted that Christensen is highly valued within the team due to his quality and versatility. Flick plans to heavily rely on these attributes to navigate the current crisis and maintain the team’s performance until the injured players are able to return.
