Manchester United has entered the final phase of negotiations to secure the signing of the Euro 2024 Player of the Tournament. An agreement was reached last night, with United deciding to activate the player’s release clause.
Manchester United’s current squad includes several wingers, such as Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony, Amad Diallo, and Facundo Pellistri. However, with the exception of Garnacho and, to some extent, Diallo, the rest of these players failed to make a significant impact last season.
As the new season approaches, manager Erik ten Hag is placing considerable faith in Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, hoping they can rediscover their top form. If these players fail to deliver, United might face another frustrating season with weak performances on the wings.
One alternative solution could be to bring in a proven winger who can make an immediate impact. According to the Spanish outlet SPORT, the player who has caught United’s eye is Barcelona’s Raphinha.
The 27-year-old Brazilian winger, who has been with Barcelona for two seasons, has expressed his desire to remain at the Catalan club this summer. However, Barcelona finds themselves in a situation where they need to sell players, and Raphinha is among those who could fetch a substantial fee.
To make room for Raphinha, Manchester United is reportedly open to offloading Jadon Sancho and Antony during the summer transfer window. Both players joined the club for significant fees, but their time at Old Trafford has been marred by inconsistency and off-field issues.
United has set a price of £40 million for Sancho and is willing to accept offers in the region of £25 million for Antony. Should these sales go through, United would raise £65 million, which would be enough to meet Barcelona’s valuation of Raphinha, estimated at around £51 million.
Raphinha is no stranger to the Premier League, having previously played for Leeds United under Marcelo Bielsa. While moving from Leeds to Manchester United might raise some eyebrows, the fact that he wouldn’t be making a direct move from Leeds to Old Trafford might soften the blow.
During his time at Barcelona, Raphinha has been a consistent performer, even if he hasn’t received the same level of recognition as some of his teammates. A move to Manchester United could provide him with the platform to establish himself as one of the world’s top creative wingers.
Whether the deal goes through this summer remains to be seen, but it could be a pivotal move for both Raphinha and Manchester United.
