Kobbie Mainoo ‘demands huge pay increase’ to reject Chelsea transfer and sign new Man Utd contract

Kobbie Mainoo, a highly talented young player at Manchester United, is reportedly seeking a significant salary increase to commit to a new contract with the club and turn down interest from Chelsea.

Mainoo’s current contract, which is set to expire in the summer of 2027, has prompted United to push for an extension after the midfielder’s impressive performances during the 2023/24 season, according to reports from the Manchester Evening News. The club is eager to secure the 19-year-old’s future as they recognize his growing importance to the team.

However, Daily Mail journalist Chris Wheeler has revealed that Chelsea is keeping a close eye on the situation and is prepared to make an offer if Mainoo does not reach an agreement with United. This adds pressure to United, especially given the player’s uncertainty about the club’s long-term plans. Despite the appointment of Ruben Amorim as the new manager and encouraging moments like the recent 2-2 draw against Liverpool, Mainoo is reportedly cautious about the direction the club is heading.

Although many Manchester United fans would be disheartened to see Mainoo leave, The Athletic’s David Ornstein has indicated that only two players—Leny Yoro and Amad Diallo—are considered untouchable in terms of potential transfers. This leaves Mainoo’s future open to speculation, further fueling concerns about the club’s ability to retain its homegrown talents.

Additionally, the Daily Mail has raised alarm over the contract situations of both Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, another young star whose deal runs until 2028. The report suggests that neither player is completely safe from being sold. Since both are homegrown talents, their sales would generate substantial profits for Manchester United, which could help the club comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability regulations.

United’s financial situation has been under scrutiny following their compensation payments to Erik ten Hag and Sporting CP for Amorim. The club’s need to adhere to financial regulations could limit their ability to spend during the January transfer window, according to earlier reports by the Manchester Evening News.

If United is to persuade Mainoo to stay and extend his contract, Daily Mail sources claim that the midfielder is asking for a weekly salary of approximately £200,000. Whether this demand is a firm stance or a negotiation tactic remains unclear, but the decision now lies with Manchester United to secure one of their most promising young talents while navigating financial constraints and external pressures.
