He is Definitely Starting” – Maresca Confirms Big Chelsea Decision

Chelsea’s head coach, Enzo Maresca, has officially put an end to ongoing speculation regarding the club’s goalkeeping situation. He has confirmed that Filip Jorgensen is now the team’s primary goalkeeper, replacing Robert Sanchez, who was benched after making several costly mistakes.
At the beginning of the season, Robert Sanchez was the preferred choice in goal for Chelsea. However, after a series of crucial errors in important matches, Maresca felt it was necessary to make a change. As a result, Filip Jorgensen was given his first Premier League start in Chelsea’s recent match against West Ham. Fans were eager to see if the young goalkeeper could rise to the occasion and establish himself as a reliable option.
However, confusion arose over the weekend when Sanchez unexpectedly returned to the starting lineup for Chelsea’s FA Cup fixture. This led many to speculate whether Maresca planned to rotate his goalkeepers based on their performances. To clarify the situation, Maresca addressed the issue in a press conference, providing insight into his decision-making process.
He explained that Jorgensen’s inclusion in the starting XI was not just about form but also about giving Sanchez the necessary time to recover both mentally and physically. He dismissed the idea of rotating goalkeepers from game to game, emphasizing that stability in the position was important.
“The decision to start Filip [Jorgensen] was also about allowing Robert [Sanchez] some time to regain his composure both mentally and physically. The plan is not to alternate goalkeepers on a match-by-match basis.”
Maresca then confirmed that Jorgensen is now the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, adding:
“In our last Premier League match against West Ham, Filip was in goal, and for the FA Cup game, Robert played. However, at this moment, our number one goalkeeper is Filip.”
Barring any significant drop in form from Jorgensen, Sanchez is now expected to feature only in Chelsea’s Conference League fixtures, given that the club has already been eliminated from both the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup. However, if Jorgensen struggles in his new role, Chelsea may need to reassess their goalkeeping strategy entirely.
