Abdul Aziz Issah’s Short-Lived Experience with FC Barcelona
Abdul Aziz Issah’s time at FC Barcelona began with high hopes and promise, as many believed he was on the path to becoming a breakout star. However, despite the initial excitement surrounding his move, the young Ghanaian midfielder saw very few opportunities to prove himself in Spain. Ultimately, his loan spell came to an end without much playing time, and he returned to his original club.
Rising Talent and Move to Barcelona
Abdul Aziz Issah was born on November 20, 2005, in Accra, Ghana. He gained attention for his outstanding performances at Dreams FC, a club in the Ghana Premier League. His contributions were crucial in helping Dreams FC win their first-ever Ghana FA Cup title in 2023. Additionally, he played an important role in their campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup, where he finished as one of the joint top scorers.
Because of his impressive performances, Issah received the Ghana FA Cup Discovery of the Season award and was also nominated for two prestigious honors: the 2024 CAF Young Player of the Year and the CAF Men’s Interclub Player of the Year. These achievements caught the attention of international clubs, and in September 2024, Spanish football giant FC Barcelona secured him on a season-long loan for €1 million. He was assigned to their reserve team, Barça Atlètic, and the deal included an option for Barcelona to purchase him permanently.
Challenges and Minimal Playing Time in Spain
Even though Issah showed great potential and even participated in training sessions with Barcelona’s senior team under the management of Hansi Flick, his time on the pitch was very limited. He made his debut for Barça Atlètic on November 6, 2024, when he came on as a substitute in a 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad B. Unfortunately, over the course of his loan, he only played a total of 26 minutes across two matches.
Despite the fact that there were injury issues in Barcelona’s midfield, Issah was frequently left out of the squad on match days, indicating that he was not a key part of the team’s plans.
Returning Home to Continue His Journey
Issah had another opportunity to display his talent during the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, where he put in an excellent performance for Ghana. However, despite his strong showing at the international level, Barcelona opted not to activate the purchase clause in his loan contract.
As a result, Issah returned to his parent club, Dreams FC, in Ghana. Although his time at Barcelona didn’t unfold as many had hoped, he continues to develop as a player and is still considered a rising star in Ghanaian football.
