Arteta Provides Saka Fitness Update After Carabao Cup Knock

Mikel Arteta has moved to ease concerns over Bukayo Saka’s fitness after the Arsenal star appeared to take a heavy blow during the Gunners’ Carabao Cup third-round victory over Port Vale.

Saka, who recently returned from a hamstring injury that kept him sidelined for three games, started his first match since mid-August. The England international had only made his comeback off the bench in Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw against Manchester City.

Arsenal made a strong start against Port Vale, with Eberechi Eze netting his first goal for the club inside eight minutes. However, the visitors were unable to fully put the game beyond doubt until the closing stages, finally sealing progress with a late second strike.

Saka’s evening took a concerning turn early in the second half when he was floored by a forceful challenge, sparking a brief stoppage in play. Although he looked in some discomfort, the 23-year-old was able to continue before being withdrawn on 63 minutes, replaced by 15-year-old Max Dowman.

Speaking after the match, Arteta clarified that the substitution was part of a carefully managed plan rather than a response to the knock.

“Yeah, it was always the plan,” the Arsenal boss told Sky Sports. “The maximum we wanted him to play was 60 minutes. There are a lot of games coming up. He is coming back from an important injury and we need to manage his load.”

Arteta also confirmed that Saka is expected to be available for Arsenal’s upcoming Premier League trip to Newcastle United on Sunday, putting to rest any fears of a fresh setback.
