Barcelona’s deal for World Cup-winning midfielder collapses

Barcelona’s pursuit of a World Cup-winning midfielder has hit a roadblock, marking a significant setback in their transfer plans, as reported by Sportglitz on June 11, 2024.

Before Xavi Hernandez’s departure, there were strong rumors linking Real Betis’ Guido Rodriguez with a potential move to Barcelona. The Catalan club, in dire need of strengthening their defensive midfield, saw Rodriguez as a viable option to bolster their squad depth.

Despite reaching a verbal agreement with Rodriguez, who was poised to join as a free agent, the deal encountered insurmountable obstacles and eventually fell through. According to Germán García Grova, the collapse of the agreement was influenced by financial fair play regulations and the appointment of Hansi Flick as manager.

Unlike Xavi, who had been an advocate for Rodriguez’s signing, Flick has different priorities for the midfield pivot position, leading to the abandonment of the deal.

Although Barcelona’s hopes of securing Rodriguez have been dashed, Real Betis remains open to renewing their offer for the midfielder, whose contract expires on June 30.

In light of this setback, Barcelona has shifted their focus to other potential midfield targets. Joshua Kimmich, a player trusted by Flick from their time together at Bayern Munich, is being considered as a cost-effective option. With Kimmich’s contract expiring in 2025 and Bayern Munich reportedly open to offers, Barcelona sees an opportunity to strengthen their midfield.

Additionally, Valencia’s Javi Guerra has emerged as a target for Barcelona, with his price tag reportedly within the Catalan club’s budget.

Despite Barcelona’s financial constraints, they are also eyeing Amadou Onana and Bruno Guimaraes, as both players’ clubs may be compelled to sell them due to economic reasons.
