Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has confessed that the club’s new coach, Hansi Flick, was responsible for the most dreadful night he has ever experienced in his football career.
Frenkie de Jong recently celebrated reaching the milestone of over 200 appearances for FC Barcelona and took the opportunity to speak with the club’s media team. Having played 234 official matches to date, the Dutch midfielder reflected on his five-year journey as a Barça player.
Since his arrival in the summer of 2019, de Jong has become an indispensable presence in the midfield, and he is now the sixth Dutch player to achieve this number of appearances for Barcelona.
“It all happened very quickly because you don’t stop to think about how many games you’ve played, but of course, it’s a source of pride,” de Jong remarked. “There’s still a lot left, but I would like to be the Dutchman who has played the most games in Barcelona’s history.”
Frenkie de Jong is currently the Dutch player with the fifth-highest number of appearances for Barcelona. He is ahead of Michael Reiziger (252), Patrick Kluivert (257), Ronald Koeman (264), and Phillip Cocu, who holds the record for the most appearances by a Dutch player in Barcelona’s history.
When asked about the most devastating moment in his career with Barcelona, de Jong chose the humiliating 2-8 defeat by Bayern Munich, which was orchestrated by German coach Hansi Flick at the time.
“I think it was the worst night of my career at Barcelona. Maybe even in the history of Barcelona,” Frenkie said. “I didn’t attend every game and I didn’t experience it the same way, but as a player, I experienced it differently. It was also the worst game of my career so far. The first nights after, I couldn’t sleep well.”
