Manchester United is actively negotiating with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) for the transfer of Manuel Ugarte this summer, as reported by Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports Germany. Despite the ongoing talks, Plettenberg notes that sealing the deal might prove challenging, though the exact reasons for this are unclear.

PSG is open to selling the Uruguayan midfielder but has set a price tag of around €70 million, a notable increase from the €50 million they paid for him a year ago. Ugarte has faced difficulties in France but previously excelled at Sporting Lisbon.

Manchester United is seeking a replacement for Casemiro, whose performance last season suggested a decline in his abilities as a key player. Although there were rumors of Casemiro moving to Saudi Arabia, such interest has since faded.

Ugarte is viewed as a solid addition to Erik ten Hag’s squad, bringing the qualities of a traditional number six who could anchor United’s midfield. There is potential for Ugarte to form a strong partnership with young talent Kobbie Mainoo, although some uncertainties remain about this duo’s effectiveness.

Incorporating Ugarte into the team would likely be advantageous, providing an upgrade over the current options and contributing to the development of a younger, more ambitious squad. This aligns with United’s strategy to build a team driven by a hunger for success, and Ugarte appears to fit this profile well.

The primary focus now is on the continued discussions between Manchester United and PSG regarding the deal. United might need to sell a player or two to finalize Ugarte’s acquisition, but the new club hierarchy seems capable of managing this, given the interest in some of their current players.

While PSG prefers a permanent sale, a loan deal with an obligation to buy might be a feasible compromise if there isn’t significant interest from other clubs.

Movement on this deal could happen soon, especially considering United’s recent activity in the transfer market. They have already signed Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro shortly after the conclusion of Euro 2024, indicating a proactive approach to strengthening the squad.
