Currently, the squad managed by Enzo Maresca includes several players who have risen through Chelsea’s academy ranks. Among them is right-back Reece James, a highly talented player whose career has unfortunately been hampered by frequent injuries. In the ongoing 2024/25 Premier League season, James has only managed 241 minutes of play spread across four matches. His season was once again interrupted by a recurring hamstring injury, forcing him to spend more time on the sidelines.

Having started in 14 of the 15 league matches so far, Colwill has been instrumental in Chelsea’s defensive stability, contributing to three clean sheets. His consistent and impressive performances have not only solidified his place in the team but have also caught the attention of England’s national selectors, leading to multiple call-ups in recent months. Additionally, his value in the transfer market has soared, and should he ever leave Stamford Bridge, his transfer fee could potentially set a new record for the club.
Key Departures from the Academy
The departure of some of Chelsea’s academy graduates has also been notable in recent times. Conor Gallagher, a central midfielder who played a vital role under former manager Mauricio Pochettino during the previous season, is a prime example. Gallagher was the most utilized player in the squad last season, missing just one Premier League match. However, following Enzo Maresca’s appointment, it became clear that Gallagher was not part of the new manager’s long-term plans. This led to the 24-year-old leaving the club he had been part of since childhood.
Gallagher’s transfer to Atlético Madrid was finalized for £34 million, a deal that also saw João Félix moving to Chelsea as part of the arrangement. This made Gallagher one of the most lucrative departures from Chelsea’s Cobham academy.
Similarly, Ian Maatsen, a versatile left-back, also left Chelsea after Maresca took over as manager. Despite making only 15 senior appearances for the club, Maatsen’s stock rose significantly following an impressive loan spell with Borussia Dortmund, where he helped the team reach the Champions League final. His transfer to Aston Villa for £37.5 million marked another high-profile exit from the academy.
In addition to Gallagher and Maatsen, another academy graduate departed the club for a substantial fee, although his post-Chelsea career failed to live up to expectations. These moves highlight the club’s ability to develop talent that commands significant value in the transfer market, even if not all players find long-term success after leaving Stamford Bridge.
