Manchester United under fire as they could get a point deduction after a stunning controversial play in the Arsenal vs. Manchester United FA clash. A statement has been released addressing what many are calling the “worst display decision of recent times.”

Manchester United and Arsenal are likely to face an official investigation by the Football Association following a highly contentious and dramatic encounter at the Emirates Stadium during Sunday’s FA Cup third-round match. The game, which Manchester United won on penalties despite playing with only ten men for over 70 minutes, was overshadowed by a heated on-field altercation involving 20 players.
The match, officiated by referee Andy Madley, was tense throughout and saw nine yellow cards handed out, including one to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. United’s Diogo Dalot received two yellow cards, leading to his dismissal just after the hour mark, further intensifying the already fiery atmosphere.
The key moment of the controversy came when Madley awarded Arsenal a penalty for what he deemed to be a foul by United defender Harry Maguire on Arsenal’s Kai Havertz. This decision incensed the Manchester United players, leading to heightened emotions. The situation escalated when Alejandro Garnacho clashed with Havertz, and United midfielder Manuel Ugarte became involved, appearing to push his head towards Havertz. Havertz fell to the ground, but no action was taken against the players involved, as the incident was not spotted by Madley and the FA Cup third round does not utilize VAR.
Former Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) chief Keith Hackett has commented on the situation, predicting significant repercussions for both clubs. Hackett drew parallels to a similar incident during his career where a mass brawl involving 21 players led to FA sanctions, including point deductions. Speaking to Football Insider, he stated, “This type of mass confrontation will undoubtedly be investigated by the FA. In a comparable case I oversaw, both teams were docked points. I anticipate charges for failing to maintain player discipline in this instance as well.”
Hackett also suggested that the absence of VAR may have influenced the outcome of the match. Had VAR been available, Manuel Ugarte might have faced disciplinary action for his involvement. Losing Ugarte, who has been instrumental in United’s midfield alongside Kobbie Mainoo, would significantly impact manager Ruben Amorim’s squad. While the victory was a significant achievement for Manchester United, the events surrounding the match may cast a shadow over their success and have longer-term consequences for both teams.
