Barcelona Set Sights on Rising Star to Bolster Defense

Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, has reportedly given his approval for the club to actively pursue the signing of Monaco’s highly-rated Brazilian right-back, Vanderson. The Catalan giants are keen to bring him to the Camp Nou during the upcoming summer transfer window, seeing him as a key addition to their defensive lineup. Vanderson himself has expressed strong enthusiasm about the possibility of joining Barcelona, a club he deeply admires. His playing style has drawn comparisons to the legendary Dani Alves, as he possesses a similar combination of attacking flair and defensive solidity—qualities that have long been valued in Barcelona’s tactical philosophy.

This potential transfer is part of Barcelona’s broader strategy to strengthen their defensive ranks, particularly at the right-back position, where the team has lacked a natural and long-term solution. In recent times, French international Jules Koundé has been deployed in this role despite being more naturally suited to playing as a center-back. While Koundé has performed admirably, both Deco and manager Hansi Flick believe that acquiring a specialist right-back will provide much-needed balance and depth to the squad.

Deco is said to be particularly enamored with Vanderson’s talent and potential, reportedly viewing him as an ideal candidate to reinforce the team’s defensive structure for the 2025-26 season. His admiration for the player is so strong that he is described as being “obsessed” with securing his signature. Flick, too, fully supports this decision, recognizing the importance of healthy competition within the squad. Vanderson’s ability to operate on both flanks adds another layer of versatility, making him an even more valuable asset. His performances for Monaco this season have not gone unnoticed, as he has contributed two goals and four assists in 34 appearances across all competitions. Additionally, his growing influence within the Brazilian national team, having started in three of their last four matches, further underscores his quality and potential.

Despite Barcelona’s strong interest, finalizing a deal for Vanderson will be far from straightforward. Monaco holds the 23-year-old in high regard and sees him as a crucial part of their long-term plans. His current contract runs until 2028, which puts the French club in a strong negotiating position. As a result, they are not willing to part with him cheaply and are likely to demand a significant transfer fee. Complicating matters further, Premier League clubs have also expressed interest in Vanderson, with English teams possessing greater financial resources that could make it difficult for Barcelona to compete. However, the player’s desire to join Barça could play a decisive role in pushing the transfer forward, as personal terms may not be a major hurdle.

Barcelona sees Vanderson as a player who perfectly fits their tactical setup, offering a dynamic presence on the right flank, much like Dani Alves did in his prime. While integrating him into the squad may present selection dilemmas for Flick—particularly considering Koundé’s consistent performances—the Brazilian’s arrival would undeniably provide a greater sense of balance and depth within the defensive unit.

This pursuit of Vanderson is yet another example of Barcelona’s commitment to making calculated, strategic signings rather than engaging in reckless spending. Deco’s determination to bring him to Camp Nou highlights the club’s long-term vision of building a competitive team capable of contending for major honors both in La Liga and on the European stage. As the summer transfer window approaches, fans will be eagerly watching how negotiations unfold, hoping that Vanderson’s move to Barcelona becomes a reality.
